Jay Jones Wins Virginia Attorney General Race, Advancing a Legacy of Justice as the State’s First Black Top Lawyer

Jay Jones’ Victory Marks a New Chapter in Virginia’s Political History
Jay Jones has been elected as Virginia’s Attorney General, making him the first Black person to ever hold the position. The Democrat’s win capped off a night of statewide victories for his party and drew cheers from supporters gathered to celebrate his milestone achievement.
Speaking to a packed crowd, Jones reflected on the significance of the moment and his family’s long fight for justice. “I had ancestors who were enslaved, a grandfather who fought Jim Crow, and a father and aunt who battled segregation,” he said. “Now, as your Attorney General, I will continue that fight—for every Virginian.”
He thanked voters for their trust and promised to serve with integrity, fairness, and determination. “We stand firm against those who would take us backward,” Jones declared. “We will reject the politics of division and build a brighter future for every Virginian. That is our mission.”
Carrying a Family Legacy of Service and Change
Jones’ victory is deeply rooted in family history. His father, Jerrauld Jones, served in the Virginia House of Delegates and later as a judge. His family’s story mirrors Virginia’s long struggle for equality—from slavery and segregation to modern-day representation.
Jones said he draws inspiration from his ancestors’ resilience. “Their courage built the foundation I stand on today,” he told supporters. “Every step I take in this role will honor the sacrifices they made.”
His commitment to justice and equal opportunity has defined his political career. As a delegate representing Norfolk, Jones earned a reputation for his focus on civil rights, economic growth, and access to affordable healthcare.
A Vision for a Fairer and More United Virginia
As Attorney General, Jones has pledged to focus on protecting jobs, healthcare, and reproductive rights while addressing racial inequality and political division. He emphasized that his administration would serve all Virginians, regardless of political or personal background.
“We are stronger when we work together,” he said, calling for unity after aheated election season. Jones promised to collaborate across party lines to improve safety, strengthen the economy, and ensure that every Virginian has access to justice.
His Republican opponent, incumbent Attorney General Jason Miyares, conceded gracefully, calling on both parties to work together to move the state forward. “The people of Virginia do not want a government that divides us,” Miyares said, acknowledging the shift in voter sentiment.
A Symbol of Progress and Representation
Jones’ win signals a powerful shift in Virginia politics. As the state’s first Black Attorney General, his leadership stands as a testament to generations who fought for representation and equality. His success reflectsVirginia’s growing diversityand commitment to progress.
“This moment is bigger than me,” Jones said. “It’s for everyone who ever believed that their voice, their story, and their fight mattered. Together, we’re writing a new chapter for Virginia.”
