Philadelphia educator Leon Smith becomes first in Pennsylvania in over 20 years to win 2026 National Teacher of the Year

Philadelphia educator Leon Smith has been named the 2026 National Teacher of the Year. The announcement was made on April 22 by the Council of Chief State School Officers. This recognitionplaces him amongthe most respected educators in the United States.
Smith teaches at Haverford High School in the Philadelphia Public School District. He has now become the first teacher from Pennsylvania in more than two decades to receive this national honor.
According to the selection committee, Smith was chosen for his strong impact on students and his long service in education. He has spent about 20 years teaching and shaping student learning through creative methods and community engagement.
Leon Smith teaches Advanced Placement United States History and Advanced Placement African American Studies. His classroom approach focuses on real world learning and deepdiscussion about history and society.
Over the years, he has been credited with changing the culture at his school. He integrates community based projects into his lessons. This helps students connect classroom knowledge to real life experiences.
His work has also helped students think more critically about civic responsibility. As a result, many students have become more engaged in learning and school life.
Smith expressed gratitude after receiving the award. He said, “It’s just such an honor to be able to represent teachers all over the country and really stand on the shoulders of so many others that have come before me that have done just such great work.”
His recognition has also been praised by leaders in Pennsylvania. Governor Josh Shapiro described him as a “shining example” of excellence in the state’s public education system.
Shapiro also noted that Smith’s influence goes beyond the classroom. He mentors young men of color who want to become teachers. This group remains underrepresented in the teaching profession across the United States.
As National Teacher of the Year, Smith will now serve as an ambassador for the teaching profession. He will travel across the country to represent educators and highlight key issues in education.
His advocacy will focus on teacher pay, student mental health support, and curriculum diversity. These topics are seen as urgent as many schools continue to face teacher shortages and learning gaps after the pandemic.
The selection committee highlighted his “unwavering empathy” and his ability to lead meaningful classroom conversations about social change and civic life.
Smith is expected to be honored at a White House ceremony later this spring. This event will officially recognize his achievement as the 2026 National Teacher of the Year.
His selection comes at a time when the U.S. education system is facing major challenges. Many districts are still working to recover from post pandemic learning loss while alsoaddressing staffing shortages.
Despite these challenges, Smith’s recognition highlights the power of dedicated teachers. His career shows how strong teaching can shape students, schools, and communities in lasting ways.
