William Craven, Washington’s first Black mayor, built hislegacy on hard work, fairness, and community spirit. He died on June 25 at the age of 86, leaving behind a story that inspires both residents and leaders today.
Craven was appointed as Roslyn’s mayor in 1975 and won the mayoral election the following year in a landslide. He led with determination, focusing on improving the small, mostly white town while ensuring every voice was heard. “I didn’t run for this job as a Black man, but as a man,” Craven once said.
A Life of Service and DedicationLong before his mayoral role, Craven worked tirelessly for the community. He served as a school janitor, gravedigger, and caretaker at Mount Olivet Cemetery. His devotion to service made him a respected figure long before politics.
Mount Olivet Cemetery, created in 1888 due to racial segregation, was one of his key concerns. Thanks to his efforts, the cemetery and other historical sites in Roslyn were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
Family, Community, and LegacyCraven’s children remember him as a man of action who taught them that work builds character. “His passing is a real loss — a man who helped shape the town through presence, not words,”said his children, KC and Corrine Craven.
Despite being among the few Black families in Roslyn and facing racial hostility, Craven’s strength never wavered. He often told his children, “I know who I am, and you’ll watch and see who I am.”
In 2021, former Washington Governor Jay Inslee declared February 20 as “William Craven Day” to honor his lasting impact. A plaque in Roslyn now stands as a permanentreminder of his leadership.
Craven’s burial will take place at Mount Olivet Cemetery, the same ground he cared for throughout his life. His legacy of service lives on through his five surviving children and five grandchildren, many of whom also work in public service.
