Jacob Wood, 24, Elected as Vineyard’s Youngest and First Black City Council Member After Leading Community Efforts for Change

7h

A New Generation of Leadership in Vineyard

At just 24 years old, Jacob Wood has achieved what few his age have—winning a seat on Vineyard’s City Council. His election marks a major moment for the Utah city, as he now holds the distinction of being both the youngest and the first Black council member in Vineyard’s history.

Wood’s path to public office began with community action. Before entering the race, he led a successful petition that rallied more than 400 residents against a controversial parking policy. “They booted over 200 people, people my age,” Wood said, recalling how the experience inspired him to run. “We rallied together and we actually got [the policy] paused.”

That grassroots effort laid the foundation forhis campaign message:Hope on the horizon. The slogan reflected his optimism and belief in community collaboration. “No matter how bad your day is, great things are always on the horizon,” he shared after the election.

Community-Driven Campaign Focused on Real Issues

Wood’s campaign centered on issues that directly impact everyday residents, including parking, affordability, and inclusivity in city decision-making. His message resonated with both younger voters and longtime residents seeking fresh perspectives in local government.

Despite facing four other contenders—including an incumbent City Council member and a longtime Utah County administrator—Wood’s authenticity and community involvementearned him a decisive win. His focus on listening and creating space for underrepresented voices was key to his success.

Vineyard Mayor Julie Fullmer praised his commitment, saying he has “taken so much time to reach out and find pathways for our community.” She added, “I’m excited for the next four years as Jacob and the new council members give it their all to keep making Vineyard the best place to live.”

A Proud Family and a Promising Future

Wood’s mother, Debbie Wood, expressed immense pride in her son’s dedication to public service. “He’s got a good work ethic. I think it’s his love for politics and for the people in his community,”she said. “He moved to Vineyard two years ago, and he truly loves it here.”

As Wood prepares to be sworn in on January 5, he remains focused on the community that supported him. “I’m just so excited to have the opportunity to work for you,” he told residents. “And it’s going to be awesome.”

His election symbolizes more than a political win—it represents the power of civic engagement and the growing influence of young leaders shaping the future of their communities.
